My Project

I teach junior high math and algebra at a small 1A school in the rural Texas Panhandle. We’re a Title 1 campus, and while our students may come from a tiny town, they have big potential. I’m always looking for ways to make math more hands-on and engaging—especially for students who need to see the math to really understand it.

This project will help bring in two sets of materials that meet very different needs but both support learning: 3D geometric shape nets and brain-building puzzles like tangrams.

The shape nets will help my students grasp how surface area actually works. Instead of just memorizing formulas, they’ll be able to fold, measure, and explore how the side lengths connect in a real, tactile way. For many of my students, especially those who’ve struggled in the past, that kind of hands-on experience makes a huge difference.

The tangrams and logic puzzles are for when students finish early. I don’t want them jumping on computers or sitting idle. I want their brains to stay active, creative, and challenged. These puzzle sets are fun, but they also help build spatial reasoning—an often-overlooked skill that’s incredibly important in math.

In elementary school, kids get to build and explore. But somewhere along the way, math becomes all pencil and paper. I want to bring the hands-on back. Your support will help make that possible in my classroom. Thank you for believing in small schools and big learning.
