My students need an Earthbox, Science Journals, Environment Books, a Science Dictionary, Cedar Stools, a Seedling Pot Maker, The Budding Gardener book, and Garden Totes for our garden.
One of the joys of living on this earth is to hear a bird sing! That is what I want my students to know and understand, that the simple joys of this earth need to be protected and cared for. This proposal is part of my Disney Planet Challenge Project to benefit the environment.
My Title I school is located in a wonderful city in NC that serves one of the largest military bases in the country.
We reach several hundred children with military connected families, as well as students with military parents who are currently deployed. We have students who have traveled around the world and some who have never left this city. All economic levels are represented, as well as students with English as their second language. My class is a diverse class of enthusiastic learners who love learning about the world around them. My students need to understand how nature affects their lives and how the simple joys of planting and watching birds can be beneficial in making our earth a better place to live. By hands-on gardening they will in turn be learning what is needed to protect nature and benefit the environment as they grow academically.
My Project
We want to create an outdoor garden that will attract birds and benefit the environment. My students may not have the background knowledge that will ensure they grow up to be children that protect our natural resources and wildlife. I want my students to study birds and their habitats and to learn to garden. The Earth-box will be used to begin our outside garden. The Tote with Tools is a hands-on gardening tool that my students will use to work and care for their garden. They can sit on their cedar stools as they observe and learn to enjoy the smells and beauty of watching plants grow. We will keep a journal for our observations, make predictions, chart plant growth, and write summaries. We need a Science Dictionary to look up vocabulary words as we learn more about gardening, birds, and how both are effected by our environment. The seedling pot maker will be a fun, hands-on tool that we will use to make pots for our seeds before planting them.
This year long, hands-on project, benefiting the environment, will help my students learn how wonderful plants and birds can be.
With this knowledge and new found excitement for nature will come a thirst for more learning. Students will also develop a strong foundation of nature and how important it is to our environment and our world. Our children need to know that they are the future keepers of the earth. Helping my class with this project will be giving them a gift that will last a lifetime.
