Hands on Fun With Math!

My Project

Only 22% of Philadelphia public school students are on-grade level for math. My goal is to ensure every student in my classroom is developing critical math skills at the best of their ability, is ready for 2nd grade, and has a strong foundation to purse future interests and goals.

First grade is an essential year for building foundational skills that will last students a lifetime.

These include social skills of working with peers, as well as understanding math from a concrete perspective. Students need to feel math in their hands to better understand it and have fun while doing it. Many children, but especially those with learning disabilities, will have a hard time understanding the abstract concepts of math unless they have access to concrete manipulatives and experiences. This is why I am requesting manipulative number lines, puzzles, games, and visuals. Math should be fun for everyone!

Currently, we utilize a great deal of partner games to build fluency in math facts. However, the way it is now is chaotic, losing a lot of instructional time with materials constantly getting lost and damaged. The use of carts with drawers would be a major game changer for our class as we can organize our center games to promote independency with students and protect supplies for many years. Centers will be organized within the requested pouches. No more digging for centers and cards thrown around the classroom.

The use of manipulatives, games, markers, and different senses deepens learning in a way that is enjoyable and memorable to students. These resources will help my students make the connections needed to become fluent, life long readers.
