Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students have difficulty regulating their emotions and impulses. By giving them sensory breaks periodically throughout the day, they learn to self-regulate and calm themselves independently.
Our classroom is made up of 10 students with Autism in an inner-city district of Connecticut.
Resources are limited, and our ability to implement much needed interventions have been difficult. Our commitment to improving the quality of life is foremost in our instruction. We strive to be more creative with the resources we do have, and accommodate the needs of the students. The learning blocks and skillbuilders will provide them with more hands-on sensory integration. It will also provide the students the opportunity to improve motivational skills, calming techniques, and self-regulation strategies. Each student has different level of sensory needs which requires a well thought out plan of action. The classroom is set up into centers which help provide them with the most multi-sensory approach we can create for them.
My Project
Our children process sensory input differently. They often exhibit various behaviors which affect their interactions with each other and the people around them. We take every behavior as a teachable moment and an opportunity to shape it and turn it into a positive experience. We offer various modes of sensory integration, which will allow them to interact independently or with others. Communication can be substituted with object identification recognition. Giving sensory strategies with the students provides them much needed confidence that will either elicit a response or to encourage them to become involved in group engagement. Progress comes slow and in small increments, but nonetheless the peer interaction is valuable tool. If an aim for engagement seems out of reach, try setting a more simplified goal. Our main objective is to provide students opportunities for them to be independent and successful.
The focus of our project would engage the student in hands-on and working independently.
It will empower them to work independently. The materials given, will enhance their hand-motivation skills and their fascinatination of items that spin, such as tops and wheels. These items will be used as daily activities for students now and in the future. Sensory refers to the process to perceive and to organize the five senses.
