Our school is a Title I school in a rural community. The school is 100% free or reduced-price lunch with a free after-school program to help with homework (pre-Covid) and provide extra time for computer use as most do not have the Internet at home. Our class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbances, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities The students are hard-working. Most of the students in my third-grade class read below grade level by two years.
The class is made up of mostly low income families.
Students receive backpack buddies for the weekend. Despite these circumstances, they continue to make growth in their education. Most will increase reading levels by 2 to 4 levels throughout the year.
My Project
The Word Work Activity Center will allow my students hands on activities straight out of the box. They will not have to wait for me to make, color, and laminate before they can use them. This will also give practice that is self checking. So the students don't have to wait to check their work. Exit questions will tell me if they are mastering the skills or I need to work with certain students.
Hands on regrouping will allow my student to see the trading that takes place during regrouping.
I know this is a difficult skill and with Covid-19, students are behind in some skills. This game will help practice hands on with materials. This will hopefully help my students grasp this difficult concept a little easier.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
