Hands-on Exploration Tubs

My Students

I teach first grade students in a high poverty school that uses inquiry-based learning throughout our school day. My school has a 40% mobility rate, meaning that almost half of my class that starts the year with me will move and be replaced by a whole new set of students by the end of the school year.

My students are hungry for knowledge and are eager to learn.

They are active, smart, and funny kids with a passion for learning and having fun. I want to give my students the opportunity to be creative, think critically, collaborate, communicate, and have a sense of community while learning and utilizing the arts. I also want to allow my students to express themselves and demonstrate their knowledge.

My Project

I am creating a set of hands-on exploration tubs for my first graders. These tubs will include engaging and fun ways to explore. My previous DonorsChoose.org project asked for tubs, laminating sleeves, and printer ink to start creating these activities for my first graders.

These hands-on exploration tubs will be an amazing addition to my classroom to give my students opportunities to talk, play, and learn.

As I started creating the activities, I realized a few things. First, I discovered that each of the tubs that the students will be using will need lids so that the students can stack up the tubs when they finish working. Second, I discovered that the number of laminating sheets that I ordered were not nearly enough to cover all of the activity boards that I was creating for my students. Finally, I discovered that I needed to be more efficient when cutting out all of the task cards for my students, and a paper cutter would help the cards be cut accurately and get the cards in the hands of my students faster. These additional materials will help my students get what they need to start playing and learning.
