Hands-On Electronics: Teaching Repair and Soldering Skills to Students

Help me give my students a portable desoldering tool, smoke absorbers, screwdriver sets, and other tools to learn how to solder, and how to disassemble and repair electronics.

My Project

I teach Intro to Engineering at a Title I high school on the Big Island of Hawaii, where resources are limited but curiosity is abundant. My students come from diverse backgrounds, and many lack hands-on experience with tools and electronics.

This project aims to provide my students with the skills and confidence to reverse engineer, repair, and even build their own electronic devices by introducing them to soldering and basic repair tools.

To make this hands-on learning possible, I'm requesting a set of soldering irons, soldering kits, and essential tools like screwdrivers, pliers, and a vice. These tools will be used to teach students the basics of soldering, circuit assembly, and how to safely disassemble and reassemble electronic devices. With these supplies, students will gain valuable skills, and some may even discover a passion for electronics and engineering that could shape their futures.

This Matters because many of my students have never had the opportunity to work with tools or explore electronics. Learning to solder and troubleshoot circuits will give them a foundation in electrical engineering principles and practical experience that is hard to come by without access to the right resources. This project is not just about learning to solder – it’s about empowering students to take control of their learning, think critically about how things work, and learn to solve real-world problems.
