My Project
Each year, I take my physics students on a hands-on, historically-rooted journey through the topic of electromagnetism. We start by building a battery from scratch. Then we make a simple LED circuit with a switch. Students observe magnetism in a current carrying wire, create electromagnets, build homopolar motors and wireless transmitters. At the end of this unit, students create projects such as a rechargeable fan and bike powered phone chargers.
When students actually touch, see, and build these physical systems, they gain intuition about the nature of reality that you can't get from calculations alone.
And it's all powered with batteries! In the past I have always bought the equipment for these projects and demonstrations, and by far the largest expense is the batteries. Folks, I am tired of buying batteries. Please, no more. Using rechargeable batteries is a cost-effective way to bring the magic of electromagnetism to hundreds of students for years to come.
