Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a large group of inquisitive learners. We thrive in situations where we can experience a hands-on tactile approach to education. We are a Title I school in the middle of the city and limited/no access to untouched nature - especially the mountains.
Many of our students are immigrants or refugees, and do not have the means to explore all that Colorado has to offer.
When we talk about the important roles of ecology, forestry, geology, and history to our society; our students have asphalt, houses, apartments, and motels as a frame of reference. This does not mean that they don’t want to learn more about nature and conservation; in fact the students have been working really hard to make this trip happen. We could just use a little help.
My Project
Going to Cal-Wood will give our students the chance to have hands-on experience, out in actual nature, with science topics that tie into our state standards. This trip is more than just studying for a test, our students will also apply 21st century skills out in the field. The teachers and Cal-Wood guides will facilitate collaboration and critical thinking as students study pond life to complete a water quality analysis. They will also utilize these same skills to take part as an animal in a food chain; learning concepts such as: bio magnification, predator prey relationships and human impacts in a food web.
It's not that they couldn't learn these skills in a classroom; rather, that we hope to bridge the disconnect between study and reality.
Our students are the future leaders and policy makers, so I believe that exposing them to nature and all the beauty it has to offer will build well rounded adults. For some, this may be a one-time experience. For all, this will spark a passion to think about and conserve our world's fragile ecology.
