Hands-On Centers: Literacy Toolkits

Help me give my students Literacy Toolkits which will assist them in engaging in hands-on literacy activities to develop their early reading skills.

My Project

I would like to create Literacy Toolkits for my students to use in centers, providing them with hands-on literacy activities in a fun and engaging way during my literacy instruction. The literacy toolkit itself would include a pouch which houses various manipulatives. These manipulatives, for example, Play-Doh and star pointers, can help engage students as they participate in a variety of center rotation activities. I have several activities which accompany the use of the Toolkits. These varied and engaging activities (such as sight word games and letter recognition tasks) all support the science of reading. The Literacy Toolkits will amplify the activities for my students and help them enjoy the process of learning these essential beginning literacy skills. I have also included cones to use as a visual for placing the centers in my classroom, and the colors will match the ink on their workplans for effective classroom management of the centers.

I will create centers within the room so that students can engage with hands-on activities while I carefully observe how the students are interacting with the materials and gain insights into the next steps they will need for instruction.

Students will have voice and choice in the activities in which they are participating as they move throughout the room to complete their individualized centers work plans. My goal is to make rigorous instruction fun for students, and the literacy toolkits will support their love of learning in a fun, interactive, yet challenging way.
