Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher at P.S. 115 in Washington Heights, New York. This upcoming school year I want to provide my students with a more hands on approach in science. I want them to observe and learn about the life cycle of butterflies and experience the enjoyment of setting them free. I also want them to witness the hard work of ants in order to build their colonies and how they all work together for this goal. I want them to wonder and ask questions and I want them to be able to use what they learn to develop more questions and wonderings about everyday life. However, in order to provide such rich experiences that the students will remember, I will need butterfly and ant kits. Each kit provides the proper habitat and the certificates for live butterflies and ants. In addition, it would not be a complete learning experience without books to gather further information. Please help provide my students with wonderful experiences in science. I can just see their eyes watching in amazement as the chrysalides shake and start to open, as the butterflies stretch their wings and fly and how quickly the tunnels start to form in the ant hill. These observations and interactions, I feel, will give my students memorable experiences that they will hopefully remember as the are older. It is one thing to read about butteflies and ants, but it is a completely different learning experience when you are involved and absorbed with what you are reading and learning about. My students will be grateful for this wonderful opportunity to observe life in action. I know that this will help spark questions about their own roles in society and develop curiousity about other life cycles. I cannot wait!
