Since moving to a distance learning environment, My STEM class has had to make serious adaptations to continue the student engagement and learning. Being that STEM is a hands-on class, where students collaborate and build things, distance learning is not the ideal conditions but we are doing our best to make their STEM education valuable and memorable. Currently, we have been doing our learning on Google Classroom with videos and activities but I would love to add the hands-on component to their learning. To do this, I would need to send home learning materials to my students to add the hands-on part of STEM class.
I am unsure of the materials each of my students possesses in their homes and it is difficult to assign hands-on activities without this information.
I would love to be able to provide the materials they need to keep the hands-on component at the forefront of their STEM learning.
My Project
STEM is a collaborative hands-on course using design principles to create solutions to real-world problems. When we left school in March, we began learning from a distance via computer. I would love to put these materials in my students' hands so they still have a similar experience my other STEM students were able to have this school year. Owl pellets will allow us to explore food chains and food webs. Catapults allow us to explore physical science principles of motion and gravity. Crystal growing will allow my students to study solubility and molecule interaction.
It is so important to give my STEM students similar learning experiences at home as they had while they were in class.
They deserve to have the opportunity to build, test, analyze, and revise projects like the students in the first three nine weeks classes. By giving my students crystal growing kits, catapult kits, owl pellet kits, and other STEM materials at their homes this will be possible.
