Hands on Agriculture with Hydroponics

Help me give my students students a year round hands on experience in Botany with grow lights. Our plan is to learn how to grow vegetables and fruit hydroponically and learn sustainable agriculture techniques.

My Project

We are seeking funding to acquire hydroponic lights for our Botany program, aimed at enhancing student learning through practical, green technology. This initiative will integrate hydroponic systems into our curriculum, allowing students to grow vegetables indoors year-round. This self reliance will give our students a hands on experience in agriculture which they lost out on due to isolation during COVID.

Hydroponics represents a sustainable farming method, using up to 90% less water and reducing reliance on pesticides.

By incorporating hydroponic lights, we will not only advance our students’ education but also support eco-friendly practices.

Students will engage directly with the hydroponic growing process, gaining hands-on experience in plant biology and nutrient management. This practical experience will deepen their understanding and prepare them for careers in agriculture, environmental science, and biotechnology.

Knowledge of hydroponics equips students with valuable skills for future careers in sustainable agriculture and green technology. This project will foster essential problem-solving abilities and critical thinking, paving the way for successful careers in related fields. We hope to be able to create our own CSA (community supported agriculture) program where our community could benefit from year around food that does not have to be imported. Many places, like here in the rural mountains of Colorado struggle for local produce in the winter. By teaching our students how to be self reliant on indoor sustainable agriculture our future citizens will not need to be as reliant on overseas food.
