Hands-on Activities Promote A Love of Literacy

My Students

I currently teach 6th grade ELA at a blue ribbon school in Philadelphia. My students are hardworking, kind, and driven to reach their full potential each academic year, even with the challenges they have faced due to COVID-19. Additionally, my students love to use technology in the classroom and enjoy sites like kahoot, quizzes, and bamboozle.

My Project

Students must know 90% of the words in a text to fully comprehend it. In our 6th grade curriculum, students are dedicating time to strengthen fluency and vocabulary by rereading, completing word hunts for unfamiliar terms, and improving their speed to read at a consistent and steady pace. However, students are still in need of activities that build their vocabulary and fluency. In order to improve their reading scores, I must adapt my methods of instruction! Using hands on activities will give students independent practice and make them stronger readers. Please contribute to my students' success this year.
