Hands-On Activities Help Students Learn About World History and Geography!

Help me give my students jigsaw puzzles, trivia card games, modeling clay, and other tactile map-making materials to ignite their passion for learning about world history and geography.

My Project

Learning about world history and geography is an important part of becoming a globally-minded citizen. Through project-based and hands-on learning, my goal is to make these subjects more concrete and enjoyable for students.

The bulk of this project includes geography-related jigsaw puzzles and trivia games that we'll use for social studies learning centers.

Students will rotate between learning centers with a partner week to week. For the centers, I selected the following jigsaw puzzles: California State Puzzle; USA & World Puzzle with Flags & Capitals; Latin America, South America, and Caribbean Puzzle; Africa Puzzle; Europe Puzzle; Asia Puzzle; and Physical Features of the World 3D Puzzle.

In addition, I selected the following trivia card games, each of which will be a center: Geography of the United States; United States Flags, Capitals, and Fun Facts; Wonders of the World; and Antiquity Quest—Ancient Civilizations.

Along with the puzzles and trivia games, I selected the following materials for two creative map-making projects:

Materials for a California State 3D Map Project include modeling clay, corrugated cardboard sheets, and paint.

Materials for a Family Lineage Map include a world map tapestry, string, thumbtacks, safety pins, and tags (blank bookmarkers). For this project, each student will connect different colored strings to safety pins on the tapestry where they and each of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were born. Students will then connect a tag to each string with information about their relative. With 33 students and myself, this will weave up to 510 strings into a colorful web that spans the globe. It'll be a stunning visual display showing how interconnected we all are.

I'm excited to present these activities to my students and am certain they'll find them engaging. Thank you for supporting my efforts!
