My Students
Every day is different, but exciting and entertaining! Our students have varied disabilities and abilities. Each day brings a variety of challenges, particularly in fine motor activities. Many of our students are non-writers at this time, but we are working on strengthening their readiness skills!
We are a special education school.
We have a 12:1:1 class with students ranging in disability from Downs Syndrome to Autism to Traumatic Brain Injury to Other Health Impairment. They range in ability from being non-verbal and non-writers to those who can communicate fluently but have other behavioral issues. Many of our children have sensory issues and have weakness and motor delays. This affects their ability to use writing implements, scissors and other classroom tools. They often need 1:1 assistance during this time.
My Project
We envision our students being able to use these resources to improve upon hand function, strength, cognitive skills and visual perception skills so that they will be ready to take on academic challenges. We can use these tools during transition time and during socialization periods to ensure independence and interaction with peers. We are looking for tools like peg boards, dough to use as manipulatives and to strengthen hands, tweezer games to focus on fine motor skills and magnetic boards to facilitate fine motor as well as literacy skills.
Our classroom and school have limited manipulative resources which our students really need this year.
Obtaining these resources will help me address their individual goals as well as improve upon functional skills. These materials will help our students work on hand strength which will help them gain the ability to learn to hold a writing implement and potentially be able to express themselves in written form.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
