My Students

I teach 3rd grade students at an inner-city school. The school district is located in the heart of Camden in an underprivileged area. Since it is an area with high poverty rates, many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Although every day they are faced with many challenges both in and out of their homes, they come to school eager to learn. These kids face many difficulties, including taking responsibilities beyond their ages, yet when they arrive at school, they are just like any kid, filled with a passion to learn more about the world.

My Project

It is no doubt that learning Math concepts and skills starts at the concrete level. Students learn abstract concepts when they tie it up with manipulatives that they can touch, see, and explore. This is the springboard to their learning before they get to the semi-concrete and, eventually, to the abstract mathematical thinking. My students love learning math using counters, tiles, rekenreks, and other materials that they can manipulate. These materials help them get deeper into their learning as they become fully engaged in the activities assigned to them.

Studies show that the best way to learn is when students are fully engaged in their learning.

This is possible when students are provided with hands-on materials such as the hand2mind VersaTiles Math Classroom Kit. My student becomes better in performing and applying key concepts and skills in Math when they are provided with activities that involve concrete manipulatives. They easily grasp what is being taught when they are given opportunities to apply what they have learned using various manipulatives. Now, they say that "Learning Math is fun!"
