Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students have never left their neighborhoods. Yet, they will gain a global perspective through our year-long study of world geography and cultures.

My students attend an arts-integrated magnet school that serves a diverse population, with many low-income students from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.

They are building community as a class and learning to take a global perspective through a year-long study of world cultures. These first graders will engage in this study with projects that not only integrate literacy, math, science, and social studies, but also through dance, drama, poetry, music, and visual arts. They enjoy hands-on and full-body activities, which is why I believe this rug will be so valuable: it will allow them to use their bodies to identify regions of the world.

My Project

My students need a carpet as a gathering space, with a large-scale map for activities related to their year-long study of world geography and cultures. It is essential that we teach our students to consider a global perspective and to explore their world in sensitive ways. This world-map rug will serve as a constant reminder during our group activities that our planet is both vast and intimate, both diverse and unified. First graders are so attuned to their sense of community, and this carpet will provide an underlying global theme to group lessons and activities. Since I teach many English language learners, I use techniques of Total Physical Response (TPR) throughout my school day, and this large-scale map will enable age-appropriate strategies for children to identify parts of the globe. Meanwhile, my students will practice working together in a community and valuing and respecting each other as we share morning meetings and closing routines to foster appreciation of the individuals in our classroom community.

In order to have a more peaceful future for our world, we must help children develop global perspectives and cultural literacy.

Students in the primary grades should have constant reminders of the richness of our world in order to foster stewardship of our earth and its people. This world-map rug will not only help build my classroom community, but also help my students develop an appreciation for the community of our planet.
