Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Located deep in the heart of an inner-city district, my students are considered to be of the highest poverty. While the district has struggled to fund the needs for our music education program, my students validate my career every day. Despite broken and outdated equipment and instruments, my students still relish the opportunity to create and explore the wonderful world of sound, rhythm, and pitch. My students are wonderful learners, and I am filled with hope for our future when I am reminded of their consistent desire to discover new things, understand new concepts, and be the best person that they can be. No matter what challenges may face them outside the walls of our school, many of my students still manage to wear a bright smile and offer hugs to teachers and students alike, they're just that wonderful. We too have struggled recently with the ever changing expectations in reading and math, and standardized testing. Music could be the key to unlocking hidden depths of comprehension.
My Project
We have been so blessed by donors in the past that have helped fund our projects for pitched percussion instruments like xylophones and metallophones. Before your generosity, we had two small glockenspiels to share with classes larger than thirty! Now we turn our attention to replacing broken drum heads and unpaired bongos. Again, we have too few instruments to effectively support our large class sizes. More over, broken and overused instruments are secondhand from over twenty years ago.
My students deserve instruments that shine and perform as brightly and pure as they do.
With these instruments my students will again take pride in their performances and presentations. They will see new instruments as validation of their potential. Through this, you offer them an opportunity to do the same in the rest of their life. New, quality instruments are exciting for instruction and the classroom. The hand drums that we have now were passed on to our school over twenty years ago, and even before that they suffered a lack of respect.
My goal is to provide my students with as many performance experiences as possible that enrich their sense of self worth and strengthen their desire to continue growing. These drums will make our time in the classroom even more exciting and will enhance our performances outside the classroom as well.
