My Project
My students come from across the world to learn English and science with me. Experiencing science, not just reading about it, is critical for their language development. Working with live organisms is a new experience for many of them. It generates excitement and gives students a reason to practice speaking and writing with one another.
Help my students gain confidence with animal care, experimentation, close observation, learning English, and more.
We will begin the year with these millipedes, and take care of them all year long as they help my students learn about science and biology. The kit includes plastic containers that link together to create choice chambers. Students will choose what conditions to put in each, and run experiments with the millipedes to record their preferences. This teaches about behavior, adaptations, evolution, and animal care.
To graduate, my students need to present a portfolio with their own original science experiment. It is the culmination of many years of skill-building in the scientific method. We do frequent experiments in many topics: body systems, neuroscience, and animal behavior. These millipedes will be my students' companions all year on their journey towards their graduation experiment!
