Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent Black, five percent Asian and three percent White, with eighty-five percent of students receiving free or reduced price lunches. My students come to school everyday from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.
I have students who come to school with so little and students coming to school without breakfast and without backpacks.
Some cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the education opportunities they deserve.
My Project
The students in my elective science class chose which topics they thought were the most interesting, exciting, and relevant to living in today's society. One of those topics? Computer Science. They know the way the future is going, and they want to capitalize on that. In order to do that, we need materials for them to explore computer coding.
We need an iPad to run the computer coding apps that connect with our robots.
One of the most important aspects of computer coding is getting to see your work in action, and that can only happen with the correct tools available. This iPad will be able to run the Dash robot apps, as well as use other computer coding apps made freely available. My students will then be able to not only create computer code, but to see how coding can transform the world around them. The ability to shape their environment, and physically see how their code works in the real world will give them a sense of the opportunities this field of study offers. Then this burgeoning interest that my students have in computer science can grow into future college and career pursuits.
