My Students

Our students are hardworking individuals from a diverse community who deserve to see themselves in the texts they read. They get excited when a character has a similar background to their own. Being able to relate to a character because of those traits or because of context really allows the students to build the meta-cognition needed to develop a greater understanding of the world around them.

Diversity in literature will diversify our learners' experiences further, thus building a stronger foundation of community.

Our students deserve to understand one another more and these books will do that.

My Project

My shelves are stocked with books of all kinds of genres, subjects, structures, etc. But a recent inventory brought the fact that there are no novels in Spanish on these shelves.

I know that some of my students read, translate, and reread the books they hold in their hands, but why can't they just read in their home language?

They can still write and discuss in English, but the time spent on the actual reading process could be cut in half.

The reading could also be shared with family who may not be as strong in English. After all, isn't reading designed to build community?
