This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Here at El Modena we have an amazing local ecosystem within walking distance of our campus, The El Modena Open Space. This area is protected Coastal Sage Scrub habitat. In this area there are endangered species that require this specific habitat, Cholla and Prickly Pear cacti. I want to offer Habitat Restoration opportunities to help rebuild that plant community and protect the endangered species.

Students will use the tools to reestablish native plants into areas that have been disturbed and destroyed.

We will collect cuttings from cacti using the loopers. Collect the cuttings using tongs and gloves so that we do not hurt our hands. Then the students will use the shovels to dig holes to plant the new cuttings in areas where there is no established habitat. We will also use the planting shovels to plant seeds in the newly forming habitats. The buckets will be used to both carry the cacti clippings as well as bring in water to water the new plants.

By making new pockets of plants that contain these important cacti, we are increasing their home area and nesting area. This will provide safe place to live and encourage more birds to have babies which will increase their population size. The students will be able to see their hard work affecting our local habitats and help to protect and save some endangered species.
