Gyotaku & Gelli Printmaking: Exploration and Expression
Help me give my students the ability to explore and create in authentic print making processes. Japanes Fish Printing and Gelli Printmaking allow students to explore the medium and themselves.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This area has a 90% poverty rate (Title I school) and an outstanding Performing Arts School with talented students dedicated to bettering themselves and their artistic talent.
I want to ignite a lifelong passion for creating, appreciating and talking about art with my students.
My students come from varied art backgrounds. Some did not have any formal art training in their primary and middle schools. Most have never been exposed to the variety of materials needed to become a successful, professional artist. They need to be exposed to different materials, mediums, and artists.
My Project
The funding of this project would allow students to explore Gyotaku (traditional Japanese fish printmaking and study) and Gelli self expression printmaking. Both of these printmaking techniques explore the age old expression and observation methodology in art. This project will allow us to travel through time and explore the history, science and creative outlets available through print making.
Gyotaku has been around since the early 1800s and was used by fisherman to identify their catches; Gelli is a relatively new form of monoprinting that allows students to print high quality prints.
Students do not need expensive presses and high cost inks to explore these two mediums. Please take a chance on my classroom and let us blow your mind with the upper limits of our creativity and observation.
