Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a reading teacher at a truly fantastic charter school. It's one of the best urban public schools. Even though 4 out of 5 of our students qualify for federally-funded lunches, last year 85% of our 6th graders earned advanced or proficient scores on the NY state ELA exam.
I run an after-school tutoring group for six struggling readers. My students, much to my dismay as a reading teacher, generally can't stand reading. However, since discovering Cirque du Freak and The Alex Rider series, they're considerably more interested in lifting the cover of a book.
With a box set for each student, Monday afternoons would be transformed. Instead of 45 minutes of plodding, grudging page turning, we'd fly through the books with lively discussions. In addition to providing entertainment, these books will serve as platforms for mastering 6th grade reading standards. We'll start by learning elements of plot structure, separating main ideas from details, and distinguishing cause from effect. We’ll pay particular attention to identifying and analyzing character traits, and using just the right vocabulary words to describe characters. We'll also use these books to explore more abstract skills like figurative language, determining the author's purpose, and making inferences (believe me, I can't emphasize how much easier it is for students to grasp all this when they actually like what they're reading). Students can't become successful middle school readers without mastering these skills, and these books would be just the tools for the job.
Your help will aid my students and those in my tutoring group next year, and the year after that,to become capable, enthusiastic readers.
