This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you get teenage boys to read? Give them reading selections heavy on boyish humor, thrills, sports and science fiction! Doesn't that sound like a good start? That's the philosophy behind the five 'Guys Read' titles featured in this project.

These books (3 copies of each title: 15 in all) are for our school library.

Let us tell you a little about the school and the kids who go there. The school is a K-8 Center, which caters to kids from four to fourteen years old. Around 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. In other words, we are in a high poverty zone. Most of our children are first-generation Americans. Their parents are immigrants from the Caribbean and Latin America, with low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. The kids' homes tend not to have a lot of English-language reading materials. The school library plays a vital function in turning these kids into regular readers. However, use of the school library tends to taper off as the kids hit their teens, particularly among the boys. We need more selections that will appeal to guys!

My Project

And that's just what 'Guys Read' is calculated to do. 'Guys Read' is more than just a book series. It is also a website, where teenage boys can recommend books to each other. Please check the website out. You'll find an account of how 'Guys Read' came into being, plus detailed descriptions of the books featured in this Donors Choose project. As we said above, these focus on boyish humor, thrills, sports and science fiction. I must admit, I can't wait to read these books myself! (I'm the school librarian, by the way.)

Remember, our students tend not to have access to many reading materials at home.
