Have you ever known a boy that was trapped in the land of girls? Boys often become reluctant readers because they have not been exposed to books that appeal to their sensibilities and interests. This is the purpose behind my special "Guys Read!" book club at lunchtime.
It is critical that my male students are inspired to become life-long readers because they are reaching the age that the outside world is becoming an influence.
Since they live and go to school in a neighborhood devastated by poverty and lack of opportunities, they require even more fortitude and inner motivation than other students. It is exciting to have them want to spend their lunch with their teacher and read books for the enjoyment of it all!
My Project
These male students are the reason that I am requesting books for our lunch time book club. I have selected titles that are geared towards 5th grade boys and their interests. They cover a wide range of genres and even include poetry! I am excited to expose the boys of my class to these new and interesting literary experiences. We will be reading these books together at lunch. The boys will have discussions about the events, characters, and make connections to themselves. They will create end-of-the book projects that are creative and utilize some project-based learning activities.
Boys often lose interest in language arts during these critical intermediate grades.
Once they have lost their enthusiasm for reading, it is difficult to bring them back. This book club is an opportunity to light the spark for independent reading and provide them a chance to respond to these books in a creative and innovative way. Thank you in advance for helping me light the fuse for my future lifetime readers and leaders.
