Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach sixth grade literacy at a middle school in Brooklyn where over 80% of the students receive free lunch. Sixth grade is a crucial year for students in determining how successful they will be on the sixth grade ELA exam. Numerous studies have shown that the more kids read, the better they perform in ALL subject areas. While there is a lot of great material available for pre-teen and teenage girls, engaging grade-level reading material for 12- to 14-year old boys is scarce. I need to engage my young boys in reading early in the year in order for them to experience success in reading. In order to do this, I need to expand my library to include titles that appeal to pre-teen and teenage boys. I'd love to be able to create a special place in my library where boys can go to find books they're excited about and recommend books to others. Please help me meet the needs of the male students in my class this year.
