My students need books that make history fun! In most history books, the people are boring, the places are boring, and the events are boring. Ben Thompson books make history come to life!

My Students

My students come from a high-poverty rural area of North Carolina. They are so kind-hearted and willing to learn in my 7th Grade, Language Arts classroom. About 70-80% of them have some access to the Internet at home. I have been at this school for eleven years and have seen the jobs and opportunities leave the community.

The students have continued to grow and strive to meet my expectations!

I am very proud of them and am happy to be a part of this community.

My Project

I plan to use excerpts from the books while teaching my class. There is so much terrific information about the people who made history, I thought I would use them as a starting point for student research.

There is a quote in the Civil War book that says "[life was] pretty much the most mind-numbingly boring thing this side of a middle school social studies lecture".

While I try to make social studies as interesting as possible, we have very limited resources and no textbooks. There is something about holding a book in your hand that makes it much more exciting!
