Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Lunar New Year!

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about the Lunar New Year. With the Minc Foiling Machine and Cricut accessories, students will learn how to make red envelopes and party decorations.

My Project

Lunar New Year is observed in some form by more than 20% of the student population. Racism often exists because people don't understand each other and don't have opportunities to learn about each other's backgrounds. Each culture have diverse ways to celebrate different occasions.

When cultural celebrations can be highlighted and shared, students can begin to appreciate one another more even in their diversity.

In many Asian cultures, a red envelope or hongbao is gifted to children during the lunar new year as a symbol of good luck and fortune for the future.

In this project, students can create their own red envelopes to give to others. Through designing their envelopes on red paper with gold foiling, they will see the significance of colors in Asian Culture. Students may also understand the significance of red envelopes in the future if they were to see them in weddings, birthdays, and other Asian celebrations.

They will use makerspace tools like Vinyl Cutters, Laminating machines, and graphic design programs to create their products. This project will hopefully help them not just increase their technology skill, but open their cultural eyes.
