Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Statistics show that students who learn an instrument perform better academically and feel more connected to their school. I teach three guitar groups in middle school, and these students need twenty capos (a clip that goes on the neck of the guitar) to play more songs in different keys.

The population at our school is approximately 83% Latino, 14% African American, 2% White, and 1% Asian Pacific Islander.

97% of the students qualify for free or reduced price school lunch. Despite the challenges poverty presents, these students are passionate about their learning. Additionally, many of the students would like to apply to music high schools. If they can progress in their understanding of the guitar, they will have more opportunities to do so.

My Project

Students are more engaged in music lessons when they can play music they like and can relate to. They often want to play songs from their culture, but many of the songs they request to play are too difficult because the songs require a more sophisticated understanding of the guitar. But, if students all had a capo, they could use the chord shapes they already know in different locations on the guitar, increasing the options for repertoire enormously.

Music performances offer opportunities to build community, self confidence, and school spirit.

We put on multiple concerts each year and the better the music, the more support there is for the music program and the students who are in them. In addition, our students perform for graduation ceremonies, and Respect for All celebrations. Please help the guitar program achieve its goals and help the students perform music they love.
