Guitar Class: Growing the Arts, One String as a Time!
Help me give my students an incredible new elective at the Junior/High School level! We are working to grow the fine arts options by offering basic guitar as a class! We need acoustic student guitars, music, and stands.
At our school, we have a strong but mighty group of students! We are a small 1A school serving less than 100 kids at the Junior High and High School. Our community is highly involved and our students are top notch. Not only are they paving the way academically, they excel in the arts and athletics.
However, the downside to being a small rural school, is that we expend a large amount of our district budget in teacher salaries to ensure we can compete with larger area schools and attract quality staff.
We often have to limit the number of electives offered due to a shortage of funds that can support materials. In a recent survey about class offerings, our students expressed wanting more music-based electives beyond choir and band. One student wrote ‘ I just want to learn the guitar! I mean, that is a lifelong skill!’ I couldn’t agree more.
Our Donors Choose project would supply the school with 10 student hybrid acoustic guitars, 2 guitar stands, and the essential music needed for the basic guitar elective! We have several teachers who are also excited about this as they already play the guitar or have always wanted to play. I can’t think of a better way to bring students and teachers together than music! Wouldn’t a campfire session of students and teachers be a neat community event?!
Our hope is to grow this elective to different grade levels and increase student engagement in the fine arts. When students express interest, I believe we must help bring their requests to reality!
