My Students
The students absolutely adore making music! Music represents a decidedly positive part of their lives. It is amazing to watch them concentrate to solve legitimate music problems on real instruments as well as the beaming glow of satisfaction when they master a skill or learn a new song.
Music is one of the major motivating factors for being at school and engaging with all subject areas.
We are a Title I (high poverty) school in Texas. Despite economic hardships, including the recent flooding due to Hurricane Harvey, at school the students get the opportunity to interact with authentic instruments in meaningful ways. This has a tremendous influence on their lives.
My Project
When learning to play a string instrument, it is very helpful if students know the tunes and even sing along if there are words. We use folk songs as the basis for our guitar program literature. Using capos while learning guitar helps to put the songs they're learning into singable keys.
Guitar education is rooted in social justice by emphasizing access, equity, and rigor for populations who may not have had access to or interest in music education in schools in the past.
The instrument is inexpensive and culturally relevant to all people. Through the guitar, formerly disempowered populations can find that they have a voice to speak out against injustices. We're not just teaching an instrument, we're changing the world one child at a time.
