Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching students how to read can be challenging. My kids are quite diverse, so my teaching needs to be diverse in order to meet their individual needs. By doing guided reading, I will have a chance to develop strong comprehension strategies, vocabulary, decoding, and fluency skills in my students.
I have started a new adventure with a new district and a new campus!
The campus I am attending is a Title 1 school. This means that most of the students I serve come from low socioeconomic environments and face many challenges. The school serves about 900 students and 85 percent are on free/reduced lunch. We also have a large number of refugees that attend our school. Most of my students face academic challenges due to their backgrounds and home lives. Among these challenges are dyslexia, slow-learners, learning disabilities, and language. Many also face medical challenges such as ODD, ADD, and ADHD. Because of these issues, a few students are academically below grade-level. I am determined to meet the needs of ALL my students no matter what the challenge.
My Project
Guided reading is the heart of a balanced reading plan. However, there are many items that are needed in order to be successful. First of all, the stability balls will aid in my students being able to sit and concentrate during small group instruction. I have many students who have ADD and ADHD. These balls can help children with disorders. In 2003, there was a study that concluded that children with ADD and ADHD improved their behavior and were able to sit still and focus on instruction. There are a lot of components that are needed during guided reading. Being organized is one of these key components. The bins and storage drawers will house our group books as well as other materials. After students have read with me, they will need clipboards to complete their independent assignments.
Research shows that when teachers take the opportunity for careful text selection and intentional teaching of strategies, students overall reading improves.
(Fountas & Pinnell, 1996). With your help, these products will help my students achieve greater goals in reading. Thank you for making a difference!
