Guided Reading with No Library! Part 4

My students need a leveled library to support our school's mission of creating independent readers.

My Students

Everything I needed to learn, I learned in Kindergarten. I never understood how true that really is until recently, when I started teaching Kindergarten! Kindergarten is the learning foundation, the building block for all learning. ABC's & 123's start the learning.

I teach kindergarten at a school where children are haunted every day by the terrors of their past, be it Hurricane Katrina of 2005 or the crime and turmoil they see and hear everyday.

Our students are fighters. They work hard to achieve goals that others may think are too much for them, and they strive to do the right things in life and to be the change our society needs. Almost all of our students receive free lunch due to poverty. The children in kindergarten this year were born just before or after Hurricane Katrina. They are fresh, eager minds. All they've seen in their short lives so far is turmoil and devastation; it's my job to make them accomplished learners! As an added challenge, due to the size of our school building, my kindergarten class shares the same classroom space with another kindergarten class.

My Project

In kindergarten, reading is the most emphasized skill in our daily activities. This school year, my children have been challenged by not having an adequate school library. In the classroom, we've created a makeshift library from donated, out of print and used books in order to give students a library experience. A leveled library in our classroom would provide my students with "just-right" books for their reading level. It would entice them to read more often and most importantly, read for enjoyment! This project, 4 of 4, will complete our leveled library providing my students with even more leveled books to enhance their reading experiences.

Reading truly is fundamental.

By funding this and its accompanying projects, you will put books and literature into the hands of students in need. Without reading, knowledge may be lost, or never obtained. Help me teach my students to read, to read well and to read for life!
