Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with the most amazing bilingual learners! As a part of the Dual Language program at my school, my 4th graders spend their day speaking, listening, reading, and writing in both Spanish and English. I support their biliteracy with a vibrant library of independent reading books in both languages. Whether kids want to read about dolphins, delfines, civil rights, derechos civiles, or technology, tecnologia--I've got a great book for them!

I have noticed a lack of resources, however, that needs to be addressed in my classroom.

I want my students to have rich literary resources across the content areas to help them reach their goals in reading. My students are highly motivated and I can't wait to get started with some new materials to jump-start the year!

My Project

I have selected some brand new instructional resources from Scholastic that will fill the gap in my library and help my students reach new levels of comprehension. Lecturas Cortas are short texts on nonfiction topics similar to what students will see on their standardized tests. These texts feature the most interesting of topics for 9 year olds and are just the right length for a 20 minute guided reading session. During guided reading, I meet with a small group of students who are reading at the same level of comprehension and fluency. My lesson specifically targets skills they are lacking at that level in order to advance them to higher levels of complexity in expository text.

This type of instruction is critical to student growth.

At this time, I have guided reading texts in Spanish but they are not leveled according to the Fountas and Pinnell leveling system which matches student skills to text complexity. I need, in Spanish, texts that are leveled to target specific skills in small groups. When students receive this kind of individual instruction, they reach new levels of comprehension faster and their confidence as readers grows.
