This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students might only be in 5th grade but they are the future writers of the world. They might come from an urban environment, but they walk into a warm and welcoming classroom where students aspire to be unique with their words. Breakfast is free to all students and served in the classroom.
The streets where the students come from has seen an outbreak in crime this summer, but my students are rejuvenated with our brightly colored walls and open minds.
My Project
Students will use a horseshoe table so that they can work with the special education or classroom teacher during small group instruction to focus on reading comprehension strategies.
Many of our 5th grade students are on a 1st-3rd grade reading level.
This table will allow the teacher to closely monitor their progress.
The close proximity to teacher will allow the teacher to model a reading strategy or writing craft. When children sit in horseshoe it also allows the teacher to hear students when they are reading out loud, providing support and feedback. Of all the components of the reading workshop, this is the most important!
More than half of students from low‑income households
