This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students really love coming to school. Our school is a Title I school with 100% free breakfast and lunch, which means that our students come from low-income families. They deal with a lot of stress at home and that stress most often comes with them when they enter the school building.
In my classroom, I focus on capturing the hearts of students by building meaningful relationships with each child.
Having a positive impact on our students is very important to every person who works at our school. We know that the stress that the kids bring with them from home can greatly impact how they learn. Teachers and staff strive each and every day to make sure that we speak to students in the hallways, we shake their hands as they enter the classrooms, we sit and talk with students at lunch, and we play with them at recess. We understand that our students come first. We understand that in order for us to be able to teach them, they have to feel safe and loved by the people around them. Each teacher at my school genuinely loves teaching!
My Project
This year I am able to have a push-in Reading co-teacher who will be helping our students reach their reading goals. I have a space for her to pull a reading group, but I do not have a chair for her or the students she will be pulling to the table.
I want my students to love reading and if I can give them a special seat where they can be present during amazing reading-centered conversations, that would be awesome!
In our room, we sit at our desks for the majority of the school day, especially because of Covid. Reading is the time of day where I let them use fun cushions and carpets around the room. I would love to add these stools to our room. Just changing a seat can seem like an insignificant change to us adults who have learned and adapted to sitting in the same spot throughout the day, but to an 8 or 9-year-old, it is this small change that can flip a switch in their mind. A small change of seating can switch up the monotony of the long school day and make their independent reading time more special which will help the students be more engaged. If they are more engaged during our reading time, they will learn to love reading which is one of my ultimate goals of teaching!
