Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a Title 1 school in Washington Heights, NYC. I am preparing to "loop" with my class to first grade next year. First grade is often referred to as "the reading year," and guided reading in small groups is widely recognized as a fundamental element of a successful early reading program. The practice requires that each child in a small group of four to six children be given a copy of a book to be read with the support and coaching of the teacher. The practice allows the teacher to pull a group of children in need of similar instruction and to carefully match them with books that will provide them with the practice they need to improve as readers.
Unfortunately, the guided reading materials at my school are stretched very thin, and it is often difficult to obtain multiple copies of books. This makes it hard for teachers to plan effectively and prevents reading groups from meeting regularly. This critical reading support is therefore undermined by inconsistency and on-the-run planning. My goal for next year is to accumulate enough multiple copies of books to be able to launch a consistent, reliable and supportive guided reading program for my first grade students.
I am requesting a starter set of guided reading books from Lakeshore Learning, encompassing a wide range of reading levels that reflect the progress we hope first graders will make throughout the year. With reading material closely matched to their abilities and consistent support in the form of weekly guided reading groups, I have no doubt that my class will grow as a community of skilled and motivated readers.
