Can you imagine being in a classroom and not having the resources you need to be successful? My students need a classroom that has the supplies necessary to teach students with diverse needs in guided reading groups.
I am a teacher in a public school that is located in an urban district.
My classroom consists of 21 students, 14 of which are English Language Learners and 5 are on a Individual Education Plans for Special Education Services that range from speech and language, occupational therapy, and academic support for learning disabilities. My students all have varying levels of English ranging from completely understanding spoken and written English, to not understanding any English at all. The majority of the students are Spanish speaking and are embracing the opportunity of helping their peers learn how to speak and write in English. My students receive push-in for their special education services and during this time they are in guided reading groups.
My Project
With the resources in this project, I will be able to have a classroom that is a model for guided reading instruction. Within my guided reading groups I will have amazing reading resources at all lexile levels that are non-fiction and fiction and aligned with the common core. Students will know where to go during center time and have excellent resources so they are able to focus on learning. During guided reading students working independently will have access to the comprehension kits in different non-fiction and fiction learning centers. Also, in another center students will be listening to, and recording themselves read on different on-line reading programs that they will be able to access on the laptops. I will also have the materials like chart paper, dry erase markers and poster boards to be able to display the different reading strategies that we are working on and have as materials for my students to maximize their learning.
If my project is funded my students will have a classroom environment that is engaging and that has high quality resources to meet all the needs of students when they are working in guided reading groups and independently.
My students will be more engaged and more independent. The reading resources will help to foster a love of reading because all students will be able to access the different books. This project will make a huge difference in the education of my students.
