My Students

Middle school is tough! Everyone remembers the social awkwardness and growing academic expectations during these few years.

My students, in addition to the growing pains of middle school, are also navigating a new language and culture.

My students are English Language Learners from around the world, with seven different languages and over twelve different countries represented in our classes. They face their challenges with enthusiasm, curiosity and hard-work. They are eager to learn and share their stories. As a class, we focus on projects that promote critical thinking and student voice, doing projects from classroom recipes, visiting local farms and creating our own bilingual poetry. COVID-19 has added additional hurdles, but we're still working as hard as ever to build classroom community despite the challenges of virtual learning.

My Project

Texts are the center of my classroom, and I love to read with my students. However, having only one copy of a book limits how closely students can engage with a text. Having multiple copies of a text is a complete game changer - each student is able to have their own copy right with them as they work. As a language class, we will use these books to analyze dialogue, think critically about water access, and make connections to our own life. The wordless picture books are a fantastic way for my Newcomer students to engage with grade level ideas in an comprehensible way.

Books that are visually-rich, interesting and from diverse genres lets all of our students strengthen literacy skills, encourage curiosity and think critically even in the early stages of learning English.

We will jump in and use the picture books right away. The guided reading books will be used once we're back in the building more regularly, next school year.
