My Kindergarten students are eager to learn , but they are also a very active bunch. Hands on activities are the most effective and enjoyable learning experience for them. Majority of our math and reading lessons are supplemented with kinesthetic activities. I was hired as an additional classroom teacher this school year because of the large size of this class. The best part is I get to move up to 1st grade with them next year. I can't wait to see how much they grow in the next year.
My Project
Guided Reading is an important part of any classroom. It gives educators the opportunity to work with smaller groups of students on specific reading skills. I am looking to add to my guided reading instruction with the materials in this project. These materials will allow me to incorporate new games and activities to reinforce sight words, word families, building CVC words, and other reading strategies. After working with our school's Title I teacher, I have some ideas in mind. One of the strategies uses the magnetic dry erase boards, dry erase markers, and magnetic letters. The students are able to review recent sight words by building them with magnets. They can also use the dry erase markers to practice writing sight words. This is typically used as a warm activity before reading leveled readers with the small group of students. Not only will these materials be new and exciting for the students, they will also significantly improve my guided reading sessions.
