My Students

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of students' grades and school-wide data indicated that the students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group in our schools.

My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.

The typical student in my class reads at a Pre-Kindergarten grade level struggling with basic phonics and number sense.

Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English and history without the requisite tools to teach our students.

In a Special Education classroom, having learning centers will allow the students to learn in small group settings and work on the specific items that they are in need of. During our daily routine students will be able to utilize the Learning centers that are geared for their specific learning deficit. I am able to differentiate students' learning as well as reach the different learning styles that my students have. Having these kind of centers readily available will allow for authentic 21st century language, math, science and social studies experiences.

My Project

My students need to read every day. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. Currently my classroom library is limited. With these new books, my students will be able to choose a variety of books that will allow them to read independently on their level.

My school media center doesn't have a large collection of books, so I would like to have books that will keep the interest of my struggling readers.

We all know that practice makes perfect. In order to increase reading ability my students need to read more and these books will continue to help my students become stronger readers. Reading can open up a whole new world for my students.
