I am an 8th grade special education teacher in Brooklyn, NY. I teach students who encounter a range of challenges (from learning disabilities to physical disabilities to emotional disturbances), but who are working hard toward a "relentless road to success" as they track their individualized learning goals. My job and my students' jobs are not easy, but I am honored to help them achieve ambitious academic goals. As part of the new teacher's contract in New York City, an additional 150 minutes of instructional time has been added to the public school weekly calendar. This time is to be used for skill intervention, but my school has provided no curriculum or guidance on how exactly to implement it. This year, I would like to implement 75-minute guided reading book clubs for my students during this time. Currently, my students read on grade level 1 through 7, so literacy intervention is extremely important in my room. Through guided reading, students get teacher support in vocabulary development, comprehension skills, fluency building, and inference abilities while still having direct exposure to grade-level texts. Additionally, book clubs are a great place for me to teach students social skills, "accountable talk" communication skills, and empathy/sympathy skills. PLUS, I want my students to learn to love reading, and discussing their reading. I am requesting 3 half-class sets of guided reading books including "The Cay," "Just Juice," and "Pedro's Journal" as well as the teacher's guide and reproducibles that accompany these texts. Using these resources, I will design 75-minute lessons twice-a-week, where my students will learn important skills, practice them through reading, and discuss the text with their peers. I am SO excited about the possibility of these book clubs and cannot wait to get them off the ground and running! I really believe these guided reading book clubs are going to be a huge asset to my special education classroom this year. I thank you in advance for your generous help.
