Think back to when you were in elementary school. Now name five skills that you were taught in elementary school that you still use everyday as an adult. More than likely, learning to read made the list. My second graders need engaging, hands-on activities that they can use during Guided Reading.
I teach second graders at a public school in an urban city in Maryland.
My class consists of 24 students, 10 girls and 14 boys. They are inquisitive, intelligent and they love to learn! My students have made great academic gains this school year, especially in Reading. A new educational initiative at my school is Guided Reading Instruction. During this time, students have the opportunity to read and have experiences with texts that are at their individual reading level. We could use a few more resources to use during Guided Reading that will improve our reading skills even more as we prepare for third grade.
The items that I am requesting will allow Guided Reading Instruction to run smoothly and provide the resources needed to meet the individual reading needs of my students. Guided Reading Instruction is done in a small group setting, usually four students at a time so the Double-Sided Write & Wipe Magnetic Easel will give me access to a writing surface compact enough to fit at our guided reading table. The set of 10 Double-Sided Write & Wipe Mini Boards are perfect for my students to record their answers and spell words quickly without needing to use paper. In addition, the Magnetic Letters Kit and Sound Box Rubber Stamps will be great resources to help my students blend, decode and spell words. The school year will soon come to a close, but we still have plenty of time to put these resources to good use!
By supporting this project, you will be making available the resources needed to facilitate Guided Reading Instruction daily.
These resources will help my students become fluent and capable second grade readers. Consequently, you will also be helping my students acquire critical reading skills that will prepare them for future learning. We thank you in advance for your support!
