My Students

My students are hard working and very energetic. They are creative and love to read! We are a year round school and I loop with my class which means I get to work with them for two years. Our school is Title I with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and snack.

"It's okay to be different" has been a positive motto for our class this year!

We are very lucky to be in a culturally rich classroom where we can learn about diversity. Over half of my students are receiving services for special education and ESL. We spend a lot of time building our community and appreciating each other's differences.

My Project

I am so passionate about reading and so are my students. Independent reading is such a focused time in my classroom. However, over half of my students are not meeting grade level expectations in reading: decoding, fluency, and comprehension. We have a great whole group, direct instruction curriculum but I need something that I can specifically tailor to my readers who are still struggling.

I need high interest books to support smaller guided reading groups.

I need to be able to pull 5 to 6 students at a time and have them read an interesting guided text. These book sets from Willowbrook have great pictures and high interest topics that I know will keep my emergent readers engaged. I need to be able to hear them read on a daily basis and having these books will help me do that!
