My Students
Students come from all walks of life at our school. We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We celebrate various learning styles and embrace the differences that make us all unique. This year our class includes multi-language learners, students with hearing impairments and students benefiting from various sensory integration strategies. We are nestled in a south side Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.
My Project
Guided Math is a time to provide individualized instruction for all kinds of learners. Students need additional opportunities to problem solve in small groups and deepen their thinking. Teachers need opportunities to question students and fill in gaps in understanding.
Guided Math supports ALL learners using concrete examples and a hands-on approach to understanding patterns and numbers.
The materials requested will be used to facilitate independent, partner and small group work. Materials will be color coded according to students' leveled grouping using the dot stickers, primary color pocket charts and wipe away sleeves. Materials will be stored in the Sterilite Clip Storage Containers. Gameboards and game pieces will be printed on cardstock and laminated for durability and longevity.
The manipulatives requested will assist in deepening students' number sense and assisting in problem solving and mathematical processes. For example, students will use the dice as number generators for addition and subtraction facts. Various types of dice were requested to meet the needs of multi-leveled learners. Students will use the number grids and lines as tools to count up and back. The number grids will also reinforce patterns in numbers. Students will complete various numbers sorting activities using the foam dominoes, including fact family work and sequencing. The wipe off boards and dry erase markers will be used across curricular areas, but will be used during small and whole group math activities to illustrate students' thinking and assist in problem solving.
More than half of students from low‑income households
