My students need Wobble chairs, balance balls, bunch bands, and fidgets to better focus their active and exciting minds on education, while being able to experience the world through tactile motion.
My wonderful students experience their education in a self-contained ESE classroom. They have varying exceptionalities, ranging from complete deafness to non-verbal autism. I have students with such severe ADHD that they are unable to focus for even the smallest amounts of time. However, they all deserve the opportunity to experience education in the most profound ways possible. I have a passion to allow my students to feel, see, hear, and touch the academic world in such a way that they are able to take the experiences and use them in their lives.
I teach because I believe that the only way to light the world, is to illuminate the eyes of the young.
To do that, we must allow them to be themselves. We must meet them where they are, and grow with them.
My Project
My students will greatly benefit from the stools, chairs, bands, and therapies that will be provided. They will better be able to connect with the content they are studying, and be able to use what they learn in the outside world. It is my hope that they will feel less overwhelmed by the school and classroom, and more passionate about the subjects and materials.
As a teacher with ADHD, I am fully aware of how chaotic my mind can become when it is focused on only one sense.
Therefore, I would like to present the students a way to have a tactile environment, to keep their minds able to focus on the visual and auditory elements of academics.
After all, we need to be student-centered, not teacher-centered.
