Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever met a speaker who you have never forgotten, who changed your life, who encouraged you to achieve your dreams? I am the high school librarian at an at-risk urban high school in California and I am always trying to find motivating literary professionals to inspire my students! Therefore, I have invited Sonya Sones, a captivating young adult writer and speaker, to mesmerize my students with her engaging presentation about the writing process and the fact that everyone is a writer.
Most of my students don't have this kind of support at home and need the influence of the outside world to help them set goals, see themselves and their ideas as amazing, and reach for the stars!!! Therefore, it is essential I bring in speakers to reassure my students that they can be successful, to urge them to consider college and engage in their education and academic aspirations, to remind them that they are powerful young adults with brilliant thoughts. However, to really absorb the messages of guest authors in an optimally meaningful way, my students must have read their book(s) beforehand.
I have a weekly book club in the library, and I will first use the copies of the book here. Each student in the club will be able to read the book and discuss it with his/her group members. Next, I will have the book available to my library patrons in preparation for Ms. Sones' visit and encourage everyone to read it beforehand. Last of all, I will encourage teachers to check out a copy to read to their classes and I will invite classes to come to the library and hear me read it.
I hope you will be as inspired to help my students meaningfully access our author visit by reading/hearing her book first. This book in particular is a powerful, poetically formatted book about the closeness of family, the sisterhood bond, and what happens when one member of the family becomes sick. I know my students will really enjoy it, resonate with its potent messages about life and relationships, and be able to independently comprehend it regardless of reading level. I appreciate your generous consideration.
