Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school sciences to students with broad learning differences. This year, I am advising the GSA (Gay Straight Alliance). This is a student-driven advocacy club for LGBTQ+ and allied youth. We have a membership of approximately 100 students. This very special, energetic group of students bring an important sense of awareness to our school; they have so much to offer their peers and greater school community. They build a strong sense of safety, connectedness, and support through club activities and projects.

My Project

The GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) is the largest club in our school. This is a large school in New Jersey, where kids easily get lost in the mix. There is fantastically high level of diversity, which we celebrate as well, with students also primarily coming from lower-income, minority households. There is a prevailing need for support especially among such a statistically at-risk group as those aligning with the LGBTQ+/allied community, as this particular group of students experiences a heightened sense of personal turmoil and instability during their adolescent years, and this club provides a very valuable sense of belongingness. We spend an incredible amount of club time on forming healthy relationship habits, positive conflict resolution/fair fighting rules, self-worth/acceptance, and other foundational issues that will optimally translate to more balanced, stable adult relationship practices. Students plan activities and ways to promote social justice throughout the course of the year as well. The club is very eager to hold a tie-dye party and make their own spirit wear to wear with pride around the school campus.
